Selbrigg pond has been the subject of much debate as to whether the pond has a rare colony of the LESSER WHIRLPOOL RAMSHORN SNAIL which is very rare. However, a survey on behalf of Natural England has come to conclusion that the pond does not contain this snail.
The Natural England survey nonetheless found out that the pond does have the Vertigo Moulinsiana Snail or Desmoulin's Whorl Snail. This is a less common snail and like the Lesser whirlpool ramshorn snail it is also protected under Annex II of the habitats directive and a more extensive survey of this snail will take place before restoration on the main pond is undertaken.
Further information will be posted when available.
